‘Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy and serenity.’
THICH NHAT HANH
Feeling the feelings
When you do this as an exercise it is quite possible that you won’t feel much. But it is still helpful to do it, because it gets you used to tuning in to your feelings, so when an upsetting one does come along, you can take a mindfulness breath and notice it, rather than blocking it off. Remember:
• Breathe, and allow yourself to open to your feelings. You are safe with the breath. Breathe and be with the pain, the fear, the sadness or the worry. Breathe, and let it be there, but continue to take gentle breaths and feel the peace and comfort that they bring.
• Don’t try to change your feelings, or wish them to be different: just accept them exactly as they are – without judging them as being ‘good’ or ‘bad’ – just that they are feelings. Keep gently breathing.
• Don’t embroider them with ‘what ifs?’ or ‘if onlys’ or with feeling sorry for yourself, or by blaming yourself or anyone else for the situation.
• Say, ‘It is as it is’ and allow it to be.
• Don’t try to hurry it, but know that it will change, because everything does; and accepting it rather than fighting it will bring you peace now.
Like the caterpillar in its chrysalis turning into a butterfly, change will happen. Nurture and protect your chrysalis – and watch the beautiful butterfly emerge when it’s ready.
Once you’ve been through this process, or seen people who are close to you do so, you have more confidence that this quiet acceptance works. You can’t hurry the process of healing, but you can ease things a little:
• Be in the present moment: breathe.
• Accept, even embrace, the pain; knowing it will pass – everything passes.
